Hamad International Airport (HIA) experienced a year of remarkable growth in 2024, solidifying its position as a leading global aviation hub. The airport served 52.7 million passengers; a substantial 15% increase compared to the previous year. This surge in passenger traffic was accompanied by a 10% rise in aircraft movements, reaching 279,000. Cargo operations also saw significant growth, with 2.6 million tonnes handled, a 12% increase year-on-year. Furthermore, HIA demonstrated its operational efficiency by managing 41.3 million bags, a 10% improvement in baggage handling.
HIA's exceptional connectivity was recognized by the Airport Council International’s (ACI) 2024 Airport Industry Connectivity Report, which ranked it as the top airport in the Middle East for providing optimal connection options through its award-winning facilities.
Throughout 2024, HIA consistently welcomed over 4 million travelers each month, showcasing its capacity to handle high volumes effectively. Notably, local passenger traffic grew at a faster rate (16%) than transfer traffic for the first time. This growth was driven by Doha's increasing attractiveness as a tourist destination and collaborative efforts with Qatar Tourism to attract charter services. The airport also handled over 12 million point-to-point passengers.
HIA expanded its global network to 197 destinations, with 55 airlines operating from the airport, including new partners such as China Southern Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Japan Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, and Akasa Air. Hub carrier Qatar Airways further enhanced connectivity by adding new routes to destinations like Osaka, Hamburg, Lisbon, and Toronto.
Passenger volumes demonstrated robust growth across various markets. Traffic to China saw an impressive 87% surge, while emerging Asian markets, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, also experienced strong growth. Mature European markets, such as the UK, Germany, Spain, and France, achieved double-digit growth, underscoring HIA's widespread global appeal.
