August 19 marks World Photography Day a global celebration of the art of photography and the creative minds behind the camera. In Qatar, we’re no strangers to breathtaking visuals from architectural marvels and cultural landmarks to serene coastlines and golden-hour skies that flood our social feeds.
But today, we turn our lens toward a different genre one that thrives on spontaneity and authenticity street photography.
Unlike posed or curated shots, street photography captures life as it happens raw, candid, and often unexpectedly powerful. In Qatar, however, this form of photography is less common. With increasing regulations around privacy and public photography, spotting someone documenting everyday street life has become a rarity.
That’s why the work of Arsenio Nidoy Jr., a Doha-based hobbyist photographer, stands out. His sharp eye for timing and humor recently earned him a feature on an international photography platform, highlighting his knack for capturing fleeting, often amusing moments in public spaces. Locally, Nidoy has also been recognized for his creative contributions.
Driven by curiosity and a desire to improve, Nidoy immersed himself in online photography communities and studied the works of iconic street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Elliott Erwitt both of whom have shaped his visual storytelling style.
Over the years, he’s participated in several street photography contests, with one notable achievement being his inclusion in Streethunters.net’s list of the “20 Most Influential Street Photographers of 2017.”
Though his portfolio spans cities around the world, Nidoy says it’s the scenes from Doha’s streets that resonate most with viewers. These days, he approaches his craft with extra care, respecting local guidelines while continuing to find joy in the everyday.
