Palestine pulled off a dramatic 1-0 victory over hosts Qatar in their FIFA Arab Cup Group A opener, courtesy of a stoppage-time own goal at Al Bayt Stadium.
In front of a packed crowd of 61,475 fans predominantly Qatari supporters the home side dominated possession but suffered heartbreak in the dying moments. Defender Sultan Al Brake inadvertently turned a cross from substitute Ahmad Alqaq into his own net in the fifth minute of added time, leaving goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada helpless.
Palestine’s resilience paid off after absorbing relentless pressure throughout the match. Their late surge earned a decisive corner, which led to the winning goal and a historic triumph.
Qatar’s Missed Chances
Qatar started aggressively, with Ahmed Fathy firing an early warning but missing the target. Moments later, Mohammad Al Mannai tested Palestine goalkeeper Rami Hamada from distance. Captain Akram Afif remained influential, creating spaces and opportunities, yet the hosts struggled to break through a disciplined Palestinian defense.
The game’s tempo slowed following injuries, forcing coach Julen Lopetegui to replace Assim Madibo after a heavy challenge around the 30-minute mark. Despite Lucas Mendes’ long-range effort and sustained pressure, the score remained 0-0 at halftime.
Second-Half Drama
Edmilson Junior came on after the break, injecting pace and creativity. He combined well with Al Brake, who missed a close-range chance early in the second half. Edmilson continued to threaten, forcing Hamada into key saves.
Lopetegui introduced Mohammed Muntari and Khaled Ali Binsabaa around the hour mark to bolster the attack. A VAR check later dismissed Qatar’s penalty appeal after Afif appeared to be fouled in the box. Afif’s solo run also ended without reward.
Palestine countered effectively, with substitute Oday Dabbagh forcing Qatar’s defense to stay alert. Muntari’s header from an Edmilson cross was brilliantly tipped over by Hamada, keeping the score level.
Late Twist
Palestine nearly struck with 15 minutes remaining when Alqaq volleyed over from a promising position. Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time as Al Brake’s misfortune sealed Qatar’s defeat.
The result leaves Palestine tied with Syria, who earlier shocked Tunisia 1-0. Qatar will look to bounce back against Syria on Thursday at Khalifa International Stadium, while Palestine face Tunisia at Lusail Stadium.
